Ideas for Day Trips with Kids

Sometimes, a day trip is just the thing you and your kids need. Day trips are usually less expensive than overnight trips, and you don't have to worry about packing a lot. Day trips are also a great addition to your kids' education. Depending on the age and number of kids, there is bound to be a day trip that works for your family.

Here are some ideas.

Zoos

Going to the zoo is often an unforgettable experience for children. They can see animals "in real life" that they may have only seen in pictures or on TV. Some children have a particular animal they really like, and a zoo trip can bring that alive. Other variations on the zoo theme are wildlife refuges and petting zoos. Some wildlife refuges have picnic tables and other accommodations, and you can see the animals that inhabit your local area. Petting zoos are also a fun and interactive way for kids to touch and interact with animals they might otherwise never get close to.

Water Parks

Once your kids learn to swim, a water park is a grand idea. If someone in your family is not a swimmer, look for a water park that has a playground, wading pool, or similar alternatives to swimming. From water slides to wave pools, a water park is a fun outing for children.

Aquariums

A day at an aquarium is fun for everyone. Kids can see ocean life from all over the world collected in one place. Another great thing about aquariums is that all ages can enjoy them - even toddlers and babies enjoy the beautiful, unusual sights, sounds, and colors.

Museums

When you think of museums, does it conjure up images of a stuffy collection of untouchable displays? Think again - museums in this day and age are often kid-friendly, with interactive exhibits and other features. Some museums have programs and activities designed for children.

Camping

You don't have to spend the night in a tent for it to be camping! You can camp during the day with kids, and many children love it. Bring food and equipment to your nearest campsite, and set up camp. You can even pitch a tent. Build a fire and cook your food over it, and let the kids run around in the woods or enjoy an on-site playground. If there is a creek or stream, the kids will enjoy wading and so forth.

Horseback Riding This is a fun outing for kids. A professional stable will be able to accommodate most age and experience levels. Very young kids can enjoy a slow walk with an adult leading the horse, and older kids might like a trail ride. It makes for a memorable day trip.

The Dilemma Facing Most Young Families

In our modern society most families have both parents working. In single parent families the lone parent has no option but to work. But...who looks after the kids?

Parents looking for day care for their children have very few options;

1.) Stay at home and look after the kids

2.) Work when your partner is home to look after the kids (Now there's a recipe for a short relationship!)

3.) Put the children into a crèche, kindergarten or playgroup during working hours

4.) Find a live-in Nanny

5.) Find a childminder

6.) Hit on brothers, sisters and parents to look after the children

Staying at home with the kids sounds a good idea at first, but then you soon find that you can't afford the most basic luxury items that your kids want. "Other kids have them why can't I?" is the usual refrain. Adults also need other adult conversation that is not about kids, and work is the place where this is most easily found.

I know people who have tried option 2, with one partner working days and the other nights. Don't even go there. Love life? Forget it, your relationship will soon be in tatters.

Crèche, kindergarten and playgroup child supervision is very expensive. Many parents find that over half of their wages go in paying the childcare fees for the week. Governments are increasingly coming to realise that they have to do something to give tax breaks to parents to go some way to paying their child day care fees. Otherwise nobody will have kids and who is going to pay the pensions of all those retired government employees and politicians.

Live-in Nanny? Well au pair then. Au pairs can still be found, but are notoriously unreliable, and with bad cases in the press this option is fading away to zero for most parents.

Childminders look after your kids in the childminder's home. All you have to do is drop them off and pick them up again. Finding a childminder with a similar outlook to your own on child rearing is difficult.

Problems also arise when the childminder is sick or wants to have a vacation. The largest childminder problems come to the fore when your child is ill. "She's ill is she? Sorry you can't leave her here then until she's better again" is basically what you will hear.

Finding relatives to look after your kids may be difficult, unless you have a turn and turn about arrangement that allows both sets of parents the opportunity for paid employment.

To sum up - Don't have kids until you have ten years' of pay in the bank to live on until you can go out to work again. :p

Educational Toys - Let Children Learn While They Are Having Fun

In today's fast pace modern world, few parents manage to spend enough quality time with their children resulting in deprivation of some vital stimulation. This caused a lot of children to strive with learning problems at school. Most of these learning problems can be traced back to inadequate learning experiences during their infant, toddler and preschool years.

Everyone loves to play and children are no exception. Luckily Mother Nature cautiously planned it, so that children may learn vital skills by playing. Play is the most vital child activity, where learning actually occurs although unknowingly every time a child plays. However a parent must regulate the play so that it remains on an educational path. This is where educational toys, games and other activities come in.

During the last few years, parents started getting more interested in choosing smart toys for their children. These toys encourage the children to learn specific skills through a fun and enjoyable way, playing. The key lies in knowing which skill your child lacks that causes a particular learning or development problem.

Educational toys are specially designed to teach specific learning activities that children needs at various ages. Since children generally love to play, especially with kids toys, they receive lots of right stimulation at the right time.

There are also kids toys that are not educational for children and must be avoided. For instance toy guns and other such toys that tend to depict violence and other unpleasant behaviors and must. Although these toys may be a good quite enjoyable for youngsters, on the long term they will only causes harm.

Toys are one of the first things a child gets into contact with. Understanding how things work is the direct answer of solving problems that comes with choosing toys. Toys assist children in learning how to grab, pull, push, and synchronize the movement of the head with that of the hand.

Toys are essential when playing, and playing with a wide range of learning toys helps children to develop their imagination. It taught them to understand that different objects have different properties and to learn how to combine them to create other interesting objects.

Although parents can perform the stimulation job better, it would mean that the parent must personally spend countless hours during their child's formative years to give all of these stimulation and learning experiences. In turn that would mean that the parents have to sacrifice their other responsibilities and obligations. But with when the parents take the time to choose the appropriate learning toys they could serve as a buffer. During the absence of parents, smart toys could be used as substitutes so the child does not have to miss out on important stimulation that may cause them to under perform in school.

5 Ways To Help Your Kids Do Math

Your kids arrive home with their school reports and it's poor marks from the math department. Now what do you do?

You may not be a math teacher, but thankfully there are ways you can help your kids improve their grades. Studies have shown that children are much more likely to perform well in a subject that interests them.

So here are 5 ways to get your kids excited about math and actually looking forward to the next math class:

1. Inspire them.
Some kids don't enjoy math because they just can't see the point of it. Unlike reading or painting, all those mathematical symbols and numbers don't seem to mean anything.
What you need to do is show them how important math is in the real world.

Tell them stories about the great engineering feats throughout history. From building the great pyramids of Egypt, to the Hoover dam, to the latest space missions to Mars, nothing would have been achieved without mathematics, and mathematicians.

2. Get practical.
Involve your kids in some real world math away from the classroom. Find something your child is interested in and relate it to math in some way.

For example, do they like baseball? Terrific. During a game, ask them how many points the losing team has to score to beat the other one. And how many games do they need to win before they have enough points to win the league?

If they enjoy helping around the home then let them do the "clever stuff". Ask them to work out the sizes for that wood you're going to cut. Or get them to measure out the ingredients for the cake you're about to bake.

When you're in a store, ask your kids to add up the prices and keep a running total while you shop. Then ask them how much change you should expect at the checkout.

3. Take life "step-by-step".
Success in math - as in life - is largely about breaking large projects down into manageable, bite-sized pieces.

Many kids feel overwhelmed when they see a list of math questions, and it's at this point they may decide that math is "boring" or "hard".

Show them the magic of taking one question at a time, and breaking it into tiny steps that make it easy.

4. Encourage creativity.
Kids may become mentally "stuck" on a topic because they're only looking at it in one way. Perhaps they need to step outside the box and see it from a different angle.
Show them the beauty of alternative viewpoints. Help them to see situations from other people's perspective.

Get them into the habit of exploring different ways of solving a problem. Even something simple like tidying up a room can have several possible "solutions" or ways of approaching it.
Crosswords and lateral thinking puzzles are good for this kind of flexible thinking.

5. Be positive.
Eliminate negative statements like "math is hard" (even if you thought of yourself as a math dunce at school!).

Explain how everyone has a natural ability to do math and that solving math problems isn't so different from solving other kinds of problems in life.

Above all, inspire confidence in your kids. Teach them persistence and how there's always a solution to every problem.

We all perform better when we enjoy what we do, and getting kids interested in math is the real key to success.

They may not turn into mathematical geniuses, but they'll thank you in later life when they enter the world of work and start counting their salaries.

Now who said your kids couldn't do math? :-)

Finding Gifts for Kids on Christmas

Even with more than two months to go before Christmas, people are starting to get excited about the holidays once again. When Christmas is talked about getting gifts for kids is an automatic addition to the train of thoughts. It’s not just about looking for great presents but also finding the best one for the receiver. Sometimes selecting the right gift can take some time and effort amidst all the nice toy displays that attract your attention. With the many innovative toys out there you may find it a difficult task to choose the best one there is.

It is a matter of deciding which will be the one that the kid you are giving the gift to will most enjoy. Make the holidays more special by giving Christmas gifts to kids that are not too common but something that they can really enjoy and at the same time boost their talents and skills. Children even at the tender ages can decide for themselves which toys they are more inclined to like. One can observe them and realize that the toys they favor are the ones that they are most fascinated with. Through this observation, as a giver you know which gifts to choose from by the time you decide to buy them.

Gift for kids ideas

If you are planning to gift a boy, you are more inclined to purchasing toy cars, trains, remote control air swimmers, sports balls, and other easily displayed presents for boys. But there are also cool gifts for kids that can enhance their creativity like the Lego building blocks, musical instrument that they like such as guitar, organ or drums. You can also help them in the development of their motor skills with bicycles or tricycles and other life size play pens.

For the little girls there are also creative presents you can come up with. Girls even at a young age love colors and accessories so an accessory making kit as a Christmas gift will be greatly appreciated. Though the usual character dolls are always welcome, they can be common gifts received by girls. Other gifts can be baby dolls or playhouse items that will increase also their creative juices as they pretend during play time.

There are also creative gifts that can be both enjoyed by boys and girls. For kids that have artistic talents, art books or art supplies are a great way to improve such talents. Also, dessert making kits may be unusual gifts for kids but will definitely spark the cooking talents in the girls and even in the boys. Other creative gifts with an educational appeal can also be scrapbook kits, activity books like coloring or drawing books, puzzles, interactive books and other toys that enhance the creative juices of the kids.

Gifts for kids : It's the thoughts that counts!

For a gift giver, it’s usually the thought that counts but when giving to a kid, it goes beyond that. What you give can also affect even a little of his or her growth as a child. So make the most of your Christmas shopping especially when buying gifts for kids and go out of your way to be as creative as you can be.

Are your kids' Halloween Costumes Safe?

We want our kids to have fun during Halloween, but have you thought about the safety of their Halloween costumes? Most of us want our children to wear cool costumes when trick-or-treating, but neglecting a kids’ Halloween costume’s safety can turn that experience sour.

Are your kids’ Halloween costumes too dangerous to wear? Find out if those Halloween costumes are safe to wear, tips for buying safe kids’ Halloween costumes, and how your children can wear cool costumes without sacrificing safety.

Are Your Kids’ Costumes Really Safe to Wear?
The answer is yes and no. In 2001, the Disney Store recalled 54,000 Princess Ariel costumes after one girl received burn injuries. Keep in mind that kids’ Halloween costumes are required by law to use flame-retardant materials.

Another problem is ventilation in full-masked Halloween costumes. Most costumes don’t provide enough ventilation for kids to breathe, resulting in carbon dioxide poisoning. If your child wants to wear a mask, nose holes aren’t enough. Carbon dioxide builds up over time, causing your anxious child to faint from the lack of oxygen. You want your child to wear a well-ventilated mask to prevent any nasty side-effects.

Another lesser problem with kids’ Halloween costumes is visibility. This isn’t just about how well your kids can see; it’s also about how well people see them. A mask limits visibility. If little Joey can’t see where he’s going, he’ll trip and skin his knee. If costumes aren’t visible after dark, people — more importantly, vehicles — won’t see the kids’ Halloween costumes, blindly running over happy trick-or-treaters. Halloween costumes aren’t all bad news, however. Carefully selecting your kids’ costumes and preparing it for night wear eliminates these catastrophes.

How to Select Safe Kids Costumes for Halloween

Before buying your kids’ Halloween costumes, you’ll want to make sure it’s safe!

Here are some guidelines:
All kids’ Halloween costumes are required by law to use flame-retardant materials. You can’t depend on companies adhering to this law, however. Pick clothing that fits well and doesn’t hang. If your child wants to wear a cape, make sure the cape isn’t long. If your child wants to wear a dress, make sure it doesn’t drag on the ground. People love to decorate during Halloween, and some decorations include fire. If a loose costume accidentally brushes against this, it won’t be a happy Halloween!

Masks should be well-ventilated. Masks should have multiple ventilation areas with big holes, such as hockey masks. Most masks have little ventilation, so skip these kids’ Halloween costumes if you can. If your child insists on looking like their favorite masked character, use makeup instead.

Make sure that the mask’s eye holes are big enough. Holes should be twice the size of your childís eyes. Make sure the mask lies flat on their face. If you can, stay away from dark clothing. It decreases visibility. Don’t pick anything that covers their face, such as a messy wig.

Once your kids’ Halloween costumes are selected, you’ll need to prepare it for night wear.

How to Make Your Kids’ Halloween Attire Safe

There are two ways to prepare your kids for a safe Halloween outing:

- Use reflective tape. This can be bought in most stores. Place two strips on your kids’ shoes and two strips on their Halloween costume. These strips shine in the dark and alert drivers.
- Have your kids carry a flashlight. If your kids don’t like it, find a flashlight with a strap. They can hang it from their wrists and keep it out of sight.

Of course some kids won’t like your safe ideas. Some kids want to wear full-face masks when trick-or-treating. Some won’t like wearing reflective tape. So how do you make your kids happy without sacrificing safety?

Getting Your Kids to Celebrate Halloween Safely

Getting your kids to like your safe ideas is difficult.

Here are some suggestions:

- If your child insists on wearing a full-face mask, have your child wear it around the house for a while. Chances are your child won’t want to wear it any longer this Halloween.
- Does your child refuse to wear reflective tape on their Halloween costume? Put it on their bag instead.
- If your kids insist on long clothing, have them wear it around the house. They’ll get tired of it and opt for another kidsí Halloween costume.
- If your children still refuse to wear safe kids' Halloween costumes, talk to them about why it’s important to stay safe on Halloween. Illustrations or stories are very effective with younger children.

Again, it’s always important that your kids are safe this Halloween season, so start with their kids' Halloween costumes. Make sure their costumes fit snugly, are marked with reflective tape, and don’t interfere with their visibility. It’s important to make the kidsí Halloween costumes safe so they have a happy, safe Halloween — a great Halloween you and your kids will remember for years to come.

Looking for Inexpensive Halloween Costumes Ideas?

Halloween is something that is loved by both young and adults. This is the time when kids can look scary while having fun and their parents would do everything to find the best Halloween costumes to make the occasion more memorable to their young ones.

The kinds of getup that kids wear at this season depend on many things. Some kids are too afraid that they cannot afford to look scary. There are those who prefer famous characters as costumes rather than to look like the other kids. For parents who are now on the quest of finding appropriate costumes for their children, here are some recommendations that aim to make everything easier for you. The following will help give your kids good memories even when you don't spend too much money to attain that.

1. Ghost. This may be the most obvious look that perfectly fit the mood of the season. Your kids can easily turn themselves to look like one even without your help. With some materials and doses of imagination, they can already have a blast come Halloween. If you have old sheets at home, these are going to be great for this purpose. Fit the sheet on the child and cut holes on the part of the eyes. Using a permanent marker, you can draw things like chains, blood, spider webs or anything just to make it more spooky.

2. Hobo. Look into the closet of your husband and choose old looking clothes that you can have the kids wear. Match the clothes with an outdated hat. Using watercolor, you can paint beard on the face of the child to achieve the kind of effect that you are after.

3. Nerd. Think about all the portrayals done on TV and films about nerds. You need to start with clothes that look outdated and the kinds that won't be worn by what society considers the in crowd. Have you child on pants that is too small and shirt that is all buttoned up. The hair is vital at the overall effect. With the help of gels, you can slick the child's hair back. Do not forget old pair of eyeglasses to complete the get-up. Come Halloween, the child can bring along big books to create the statement.

4. Angel. Like the sheet that you use for the ghost costume, this can also be utilized for this purpose. Instead of ghastly drawings, you can use clear spray and sprinkle some glitter to complete the effect. Create a halo and wings from available materials, or you can buy the affordable kinds.

There are more ideas that you can adapt at this instance wherein you are not required to spend so much. In choosing Halloween costumes, these do not have to be expensive. The important thing here is that the child will enjoy and remember fun memories on the event no matter what they wear.

Birthday Party Tips for your Kids

There are probably times when you have reminisced about and remembered the many birthday parties that you had as a kid and remembered how they were real fun for you and your friends! Today, kids still want to have fun at their birthday parties and there seems to always be some parents who want to throw their kids the birthday parties of a lifetime! If you're one of those parent's then you probably already know that you should not only keep the birthday party safe but that it should also be well chaperoned. If you are bound and determined to throw your child a great birthday party then there are always some tips to keep in mind to make sure that it's a safe and happy time for everyone.

First of all, if your child's friends are coming over to your house then you'll want to be prepared. One of the first steps in preparation for your kid's birthday party is the activities that'll be done. There are a whole host of activities that the children can do when they come over to your house to have fun at a birthday party! For example, you could turn the whole day into a big movie marathon with plenty of candy and popcorn to go around. If you want to go this route then a good idea would be to hold a vote with the children about which movies that they'd like to watch. Or, if you'd prefer, the birthday son or daughter can be the one to pick out the majority of the movies that everyone will be watching.

Aside from a movie marathon event, however, there should always be some backup activities. For example, having a piñata at your home is always a fun event for a children's birthday party, as well as traditional birthday party games, like "Pin the Tail on the Donkey." There are plenty of ways to get ideas for birthday fun; whether you research different birthday games on the internet or you ask for advice, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy for the whole time that they are at your house!

Another birthday party tip that you'll want to remember is to always have food on hand. Whether it's plenty of pizza to go around or a non-stop candy bowl, children are always going to be hungry. And what's better then being able to pig out at a birthday party! Kids are usually voracious little creatures, so be sure to have plenty of soda pop, food, and snacks around for everyone to enjoy! One safe thing to keep in mind, though, is food allergies of the other kids. You may want to ask each individual parent if their children are allergic to any food items so that you can be sure that it won't be served. This is the safest way to protect everything from anything potentially harmful!

If you opt not to hold your child's birthday party at your house, though, you can always take it upon yourself to take everyone to a bowling alley or other fun place. For example, Chuck E. Cheese is another excellent place to hold your child's birthday party. If you decide to go this route, though, making sure you have plenty of help and supervision is crucial!

All of these things are important to remember when thinking about holding a birthday party for your son or daughter! Your child's birthday party absolutely does not have to be a big hassle, but you do have to remember important advice about fun and safety!
