You may not be a math teacher, but thankfully there are ways you can help your kids improve their grades. Studies have shown that children are much more likely to perform well in a subject that interests them.

So here are 5 ways to get your kids excited about math and actually looking forward to the next math class:

1. Inspire them.
Some kids don't enjoy math because they just can't see the point of it. Unlike reading or painting, all those mathematical symbols and numbers don't seem to mean anything.
What you need to do is show them how important math is in the real world.

Tell them stories about the great engineering feats throughout history. From building the great pyramids of Egypt, to the Hoover dam, to the latest space missions to Mars, nothing would have been achieved without mathematics, and mathematicians.

2. Get practical.

A common misconception in today’s society is that a chubby baby is a healthy baby. Yes, we all love cute, chubby babies, but the sad reality is that too many of those chubby babies will later turn into unhealthy, chubby adults. As parents, it is our job to ensure we build a good foundation for our children by introducing them to a wide variety of foods, and not let them over indulge on sweet sugary deserts and empty calories.

With the increasing popularity and convenience of fast food, nearly one out of every five children is battling obesity. Obesity is now common throughout the world, regardless of race or gender. With obesity becoming a problem at these early ages, there is a significantly higher likelihood of adult disease and health problems earlier in life. Obesity is fast becoming a wide spread health danger to our human world.

With more advances in modern technology, we have found ways to do things the lazy way, eliminating a lot of physical exercise we used to get on a daily basis just going about our normal routines. Kids now ride scooters or four wheelers rather than bicycles or roller skates. They now choose to spend their free time in front of the computer, television, or with a video game rather than outside playing tag and hide and go seek. This decrease in exercise is a common culprit among today’s children. We, the parents, have to be strong, and limit the time we allow them to spend playing video games or in front of the television. Sometimes, we may have to change our own habits to get them to change theirs. Go outside and play with your children, play ball, go bike riding, etc. Doing things as a family often makes them more fun, and therefore will be easier to get your kids involved in.

It seems like everyday as parents, our lives get busier and faster paced, and we have less and less time to accomplish what needs to be done. We often look for the easy way out, giving in to running through drive through on the way home from work, rather than going home and cooking dinner as we should. If we prepare our meals, we know what the ingredients are, and have the power to make healthy choices. Going with the fast food option is more convenient, but often is very low on the nutritional value side of things, and also teaches your kids that it is okay to eat that junk, often leasing them to develop bad eating habits of their own. If you have to go the fast food way occasionally, opt for salads and grilled chicken, or try to go with the healthiest choices on the menu, rather than the all too alluring burger and fries.

Kids who spend a lot of time inside in front of television or video games also increase their risk for obesity by indulging in junk food. They eat ice cream, potato chips, cookies, etc., adding to their caloric intake, while reducing the amount of physical exercise they get, again increasing their odds for becoming obese significantly.

Basically, childhood obesity is caused by lack of physical exercise, bad food choices, and to be frank, lack of parental control over their children’s lives.

Obese children are at increased risk for all kinds of health conditions. Common problems include early onset diabetes, joint problems from carrying excess weight, heart disease, and mental and social issues caused by being overweight. School age children often think it is fun to pick on each other, and this joking can cause a world of self esteem problems for the overweight child that will often carryover into adulthood. Then of course, the health risks are increased due to the fact that most obese children will eventually turn into obese adults, with a variety of other health issues to deal with.

It is important to do everything you can to prevent childhood obesity from striking your kids, as you are the first weapon against this dangerous problem. Teach your kids how to make healthy food choices, and most importantly get them outside and active, even if you have to do it too. Parents by no means take all the blame for this problem, but we can take steps to help combat it before it begins.

But none of these 21st century ‘facts of life’ are congruent with traditional mass education systems the roots of which lie in the 19th century.
This has led to a re-think for the educational systems around the world. You may not realize this but your child is in the middle of great changes in education. So why is there a need to change? Traditionally, mass education systems were designed to prepare your child to pass examinations. Jobs and careers were for life.

* trained, experienced teachers who enjoy, understand and can lead children
* enough teachers and assistants, ideally, at least one for every five children, small rather than large groups if possible. (Studies have shown that five children with one caregiver is better than 20 children with four caregivers)
* staff that has been there for a long period of time
* opportunities for creative work, imaginative play, and physical activity
* space to move indoors and out
* lots of drawing and coloring materials and toys, as well as equipment such as swings, wagons, jungle gyms, etc.

If the child seems afraid to go to day care, parents should introduce the new environment gradually: at first, the mother or father can go along, staying nearby while the child plays. The parent and child can stay for a longer period each day until the child wants to become part of the group.

Though parents may worry about how the child will do, they should show pleasure in helping their child succeed. If the child shows unusual or persistent terror about leaving home, parents should discuss it with their pediatrician.

Communicating with our children can be a difficult task at times. We feel like they're not listening to us; they feel like we're not listening to them. Good listening and communications skills are essential to successful parenting. Your child's feelings, views and opinions have worth, and you should make sure you take the time to sit down and listen openly and discuss them honestly.

It seems to be a natural tendency to react rather than to respond. We pass judgment based on our own feelings and experiences. However, responding means being receptive to our child's feelings and emotions and allowing them to express themselves openly and honestly without fear of repercussion from us. By reacting, we send our child the message that their feelings and opinions are invalid. But by responding and asking questions about why the child feels that way, it opens a dialog that allows them to discuss their feelings further, and allows you a better understanding of where they're coming from. Responding also gives you an opportunity to work out a solution or a plan of action with your child that perhaps they would not have come up with on their own. Your child will also appreciate the fact that maybe you do indeed understand how they feel.

It's crucial in these situations to give your child your full and undivided attention. Put down your newspaper, stop doing dishes, or turn off the television so you can hear the full situation and make eye contact with your child. Keep calm, be inquisitive, and afterwards offer potential solutions to the problem.

Don't discourage your child from feeling upset, angry, or frustrated. Our initial instinct may be to say or do something to steer our child away from it, but this can be a detrimental tactic. Again, listen to your child, ask questions to find out why they are feeling that way, and then offer potential solutions to alleviate the bad feeling.

Just as we do, our children have feelings and experience difficult situations. By actively listening and participating with our child as they talk about it, it demonstrates to them that we do care, we want to help and we have similar experiences of our own that they can draw from. Remember, respond - don't react.

Everyone loves to have a little fun now and again. Especially kids! And, of course those that are still kids at heart. But, with the rising economy, it becomes more and more difficult to have money on hand for fantastic family outings.

Here are some fun indoor activities that you can spend "Quality" time with your kid/kids :

Blowing Bubbles

Making your own bubbles couldn't be easier! You can use liquid hand soap and a bit of water to do this. All you would need is a bubble wand, which you could create out of a bit of thin wire(left over Easter Egg wire dippers would be excellent for this), and a container for the bubbles(you could simply use a bowl or plastic container for that) and you're all set.

For smaller children, try picking up some "tear free" shampoo to create your bubble mixture with. Do remember that the more "foamy" a liquid soap is, the lower quality your bubble mixture will be. Now, to create your own bubbles, simply take 1/15 cup of liquid soap(actually it is said that dish washing liquid works best) mixed with 1 cup of water inside whatever container you want to store it in.

Go to a charity shop or wallpaper shop and buy leftover rolls of wallpaper. Cover a wall with the paper, back to front, stick it up with blu-tac or drawing pins.

Board Games

Almost every family home has one form of board game or another. Whether it be your standard board game such as Monopoly, Sorry, Trouble, etc., or a DVD type trivia game, these can provide hours of fun.

While DVD style games are fun, the classic board games are better as you will never have the same outcome. Meaning, even though you are playing the exact same game, the winner is unknown until you have finished the game.

Try spicing up the game by playing for different types of prizes, but be sure that everyone will win something. The prizes could be dividing up chores that are to be done, having the 1st place winner getting the easiest household chore and the last place winner receiving the more difficult, or the chore that is least preferred by all family members.

You could also try having the prizes consist of allowing the 1st place winner pick tomorrow's activity, 2nd place winner picking the following day's activity, and so on.

If you don't have a board game lying around, why not invent your own games? Activities such as "treasure hunts" can be fun and educational at the same time. You can create your own maps or clue lists and let the first place winner(s) have first pick at the treasures. And, of course, the treasures can be anything you can think of that would have significant value within your particular family unit.

Also, a good game of hide and seek can also be hours of fun for all ages. And, hide and seek can be played both indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.

It was in 1851, in Massachusetts, that the first state adoption took place. Rev. Charles Loring Brace was the founder of the New York Children's Aid Society in 1853, which helped orphaned and abandoned children. He wanted to rescue these children and transport them to good Christian homes. They were placed on Brace's 'Emigration Plan' onto regular trains called the 'Orphan Trains' for families to view at each station, until they were taken up by one of many of the wealthy farming families.

Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what is it actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual?

Many people think that Halloween is a “devil worshipping” holiday celebrated by people who don’t believe in God, but the truth is that Halloween really has its basic origins in the Catholic Church. Halloween means “All Saints Eve” or “All Hallows Eve”.

All Saints Day is a religious holiday observed by the Catholic Church and set aside for worship of all the saints in heaven. They used to consider it with all solemnity as one of the most significant observances of the Church year. The American origin of Halloween extends further from the Celts celebration of Samhain (pronounced sow – in) which is a Druidic festival made to celebrate the end of the harvest. As with a lot of Celtic lore, faeries were thought to be extremely active at this time as they ushered in the winter.

Celts believed that on the night before the “new year”, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31, they celebrate Samhain.

It was on this day that they believe the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth causing trouble and damaging crops. Celts felts that the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Druids – Celtic priests – to make predictions about the future. For a people entirely dependent on the natural world, which could be quite volatile, these prophecies were an important source of comfort and direction during the long, dark winger.

During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes – typically consisting of animal heads and skins – and they tried to tell each other’s fortunes. They would build huge sacred bonfires where people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to the Celtic deities. When the celebration was over, they re-lit the fires in their hearths which they had put out earlier that evening. The fires would be re-lit with flame from the sacred bonfire to help protect them during the coming winter. The belief is that Halloween originated in Ireland and, as we’ve said previously, was known as “Samhain Night”. This festival celebrated the end of the harvest season and ushered in the winter.

They spent the evening of October 31st dressed in costume celebrating around bonfires and paying homage to the Druid Gods that were hoped to keep them safe throughout the long winter.

Today, in Ireland, adults and children dress up as creatures from the underworld. The
costumes range from ghosts, ghouls, zombies, witches, and goblins. They light bonfires and enjoy spectacular fireworks displays even if in some places fireworks are illegal.

The children walk around knocking on the doors of neighbors to gather fruit, nuts, and sweets for the Halloween festival. At one time, salt was sprinkled in the hair of the children by their neighbors in order to protect them from evil spirits. Houses are decorated with carved pumpkins or turnips that sports scary faces and a candle is placed inside the hollowed out fruit to light and decorate. The Irish also decorate their homes to celebrate this holiday.

Many people still bake a traditional Halloween cake called a barmbrack which is fruit bread. Each member of the family gets a slice of the cake. Great interest is taken in this tradition as there is a piece of rag, a coin, and a ring in each cake.

So, although some cults may have adopted Halloween as their favorite "holiday," the day itself did not grow out of evil practices. It grew out of the rituals of Celts celebrating a new year, and out of Medieval prayer rituals of Europeans. And today, even many churches have Halloween parties or pumpkin carving events for the kids. After all, the day itself is only as evil as one cares to make it.

Social networking sites are very popular among teens because this is gives them a sense of belonging. While many say that this is part of growing up, there are risks involved, which is why they should be cautions.

Self-esteem is not something you are born with. In some ways, it is something you are given; like a GIFT. When children are young, they develop much of their sense of self-worth by studying how others perceive them.

If children only receive negative reinforcement, they won't think much of themselves. However, if they get praises and encouragement, they will begin to develop a sense of pride in themselves. This will sustain them for the rest of their lives !

Each child is special. Each of them has unique talents and abilities that set him/her apart from everyone else. It's the responsibilities of the parents to make sure that our children know just how remarkable they are.

Children growing up filled with self-esteem will have the courage to go out into the world and try new things, to respect other people's ideas and to face challenges with a sense that they can do anything they put their minds to.

1. Tell your child you love him/her at least once a day.

When children hear the word homework, they automatically remember something that is not fun. In addition, they’re often exhausted after school. Therefore it important that we give them ample time to unwind before we insist that they complete their academic work. We can do this by administering a health snack and giving them a bit of personal time immediately after school.

>>2. Change their vision about homework.

Many kids don’t like homework therefore we must turn their vision around. We must teach them that homework can be a lot of fun. Instead of thinking of it as work to do at home, we can encourage them to see it as a time to further educate our brains in a fun and enriching manner. This simply paradigm shift will get results, trust me.

>>3. Make an enrichment plan with your kids.

Get your children involved and excited about their homework. This can be done by getting them involved in a homework plan that gets them excited. To create this plan, brainstorm with your kids. Ask them questions like, “Why do we need to have enrichment time? How much time should you spend every day on enrichment time? Where will you set up enrichment time? What can we both do to make enrichment time more fun and enrichment? Both of you should take time to really think about the plan and how to make it worth for the both of you.

If you don't mind shoot-em up games, the Ben 10 video games are great. They are fairly easy to play, challenging but not too much so. There's great sound and story line and you have to solve problems. The best bits for young Ben 10 fans are:
another player can join or leave and help at any point in the game; and

you start from where you run out of life so you don't have to go back to the beginning of a level.

6. Which is the worst Ben 10 Toy?

The playsets are typically expensive, cumbersome and have too many parts that get lost. Generally they also require you to buy the rest of the product range to use with it, so are often not worth the money. The adverts and the packaging are always very tempting but once the box is opened and the first play frenzy is over, disappointment sets in.

Why Healthy Teeth Are Important

Going to the dentist seems to be one of greatest fears in childhood. Fears on someone probing inside the mouth, puts fingers and utensils in it are unwanted memories. To beat this kind of phobia, pre-hand teaching on a dentist appointment is essential to the child.

As they get the habit of going to the dentist on a regular basis, they will overcome this fears and have a friendlier appointment basing on what you have taught them.

Kids can take charge of their teeth by taking these steps :

•Brush at least twice a day - after breakfast and before bedtime. If you can, brush after lunch or after sweet snacks. Brushing properly breaks down plaque.

•Brush all of your teeth, not just the front ones. Spend some time on the teeth along the sides and in the back. Brush away from your gums.

•Take your time while brushing. Spend at least 3 minutes each time you brush. If you have trouble keeping track of the time, use a timer or play a recording of a song you like to help pass the time.

•Be sure your toothbrush has soft bristles (the package will tell you if they're soft). Ask your parent to help you get a new toothbrush every 3 months. Some toothbrushes come with bristles that change color when it's time to change them.

•Learn how to floss your teeth, which is a very important way to keep them healthy.

It feels weird the first few times you do it, but pretty soon you'll be a pro. Slip the dental floss between each tooth and up along the gum line. The floss gets rid of food that's hidden where your toothbrush can't get it, no matter how well you brush.
It's also important to visit the dentist twice a year. Besides checking for signs of cavities or gum disease, the dentist will help keep your teeth extra clean, and he or she can help you learn the best way to brush and floss.

It's not just brushing and flossing that keep your teeth healthy - you also need to be careful about what you eat and drink. Remember, the plaque on your teeth is just waiting for that sugar to arrive. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda. And don't forget to smile!

all together in the same place at the same time can be a difficult chore. Between work schedules, after-school activities, errands, and the like, it seems we have less and less time. But with a few simple ideas and some planning, meal time can be an enjoyable and treasured family time.

Designate no less than one night per week to have a sit-down meal with your family. Sunday nights are usually a good choice for this because you have more time to relax and the weekend chores have been completed.

Involve your children in the meal planning and preparation. This gives them a strong sense of self and the foundation for a lifetime of healthy meal planning and preparation.

Make sure the television is off, and make it a rule that all phone calls go to voice mail or the answering machine during the meal. Take this time to visit with one another and enjoy one another's company. This is a great time to reconnect and find out what events happened this week. Take your time eating, and teach your children how to do the same in the process. Eating slowly is a healthy habit. Don't jump up and start clearing dishes and putting things away until everyone is done eating and talking.

On those days that you can't sit down as a family, try to make a habit of sitting down and chatting with them while they are eating, instead of rushing around catching up on the chores. This shows them you're interested and that you care and want to be and involved and important part of their every day life.

Being Involved in your Child's Education

It has been shown many times over in research studies that a parent who is involved in their child's education has a positive impact. It's reflected in improved grades and test scores, strong attendance, a higher rate of homework completion, higher graduation rates, improved attitudes and behaviors in the child, as well as the child being more likely to become involved in positive extra-curricular activities. Send out the message early in your child's education that your home is an involved and active supporter of their learning.

Probably the most important element of a positive learning environment at home is structure. But what is too little or too much? If we're too lenient or expect too little, your child may become disorganized or unmotivated. If we're too rigid and strict, it can cause undue pressure or cause your child to feel unable to deliver on your expectations.

So what's the best way to meet in the middle and create a positive learning environment for your child at home?

Help your child develop a work area where they can study and focus without being interrupted. Children usually do better when they have a private study area away from interruption. If your child prefers doing their work at the kitchen table, make sure other family members understand the kitchen is off-limits during study time. Make sure your child has plenty of supplies and reference materials available and that the area has plenty of light. Regardless of its location, ensure the area is quiet and that your child can study and work uninterrupted.

Agree on a regular time for studying. To help your child make homework a habit, schedule a set time each day for homework. Perhaps breaking study time up into smaller increments would work better for your child than one solid period. Work with your child to find out what works best for them. In addition, be sure your child has a sufficient break between the time they arrive home from school before they sit down to work in order to 'decompress' from their school day.

Help your child develop a method of keeping track of homework assignments. This can be a difficult chore for some students. Developing a successful way of keeping track of assignments then scratching them off as completed helps them develop a productive method for accomplishing tasks later in life.

Develop a positive line of communication with your child's teacher. Teachers are usually very willing and excited to work with an involved parent to help the child's overall success in school. Whether it's notes sent back and forth in your child's backpack or an e-mail correspondence, make sure your teacher knows your open for suggestions as how to better assist them in the homework and study process at home.

You Can't Spoil a Child through Love

It's a parent's job to provide love, safety and encouragement. The process of growing up provides children with lots of challenges. Try to listen openly and understand their situation and communicate honestly with them when they have difficulties and letdowns in their life.

Set appropriate limits with your child and then adhere to them. Establishing limits with your child gives them a sense of safety and security. Sometimes parents do not set limits because they don't want to fight with their children. They don't want to cause bad feelings. They may beg a child to comply. Or they may make a rule and fail to enforce it. They may nag without ever enforcing the rules. None of these helps children. When your child fails to adhere or comply with the boundaries you've set for them, be firm yet kind in your response. This lets them know that you're serious about the rule but dedicated to helping and loving them.

Bear in mind though that each child is different and what works for one child may not work for another. For example, one child may respond well to the direct approach of telling them a specific time to be home, where another child may need a gentle reminder that it's now time to come home.

Develop a firm but kind manner of making and enforcing your household's rules and expectations. There's no need to fear our children, and there should be no need to instill a sense of fear in our children in order to get them to comply.

Seven Tips to Help Stop Your Child's Bedwetting

Bedwetting (also known as enuresis) is usually caused by an underdeveloped urinary system causing the release of urine during the night when the child is in a deep sleep. This issue is a lot more common than most parents realize. That fact doesn’t make it any less frustrating for the parent or less embarrassing for the child.

It’s frustrating for the parent because they have to change wet sheets in the middle of the night on a fairly regular basis, oftentimes nightly. It’s embarrassing for the child, often preventing them from wanting to spend the night at friend’s houses or go for birthday sleepovers.

One of the most important things you want to do about your child’s bedwetting is make sure you don’t get upset with them over it. It’s not their fault. Do not punish them! Because the child will more than likely already be feeling self-conscious, embarrassed about it you need to help reassure them that they aren’t alone and there is nothing wrong with them.

Here are 7 tips to use to help your child’s bedwetting problems :

*Limit the amount of liquids in the evening. Have them drink the majority of their liquids during the morning/day.

*Limit caffeine. Again, especially in the evenings.

*Make sure that your child goes to the bathroom before bed.

*Set an alarm to get up in the middle of the night & take your child to the bathroom.

*Reward chart. This will help encourage your child to keep trying. Place a sticker on the chart for every dry night.

*Bed wetting alarms. These are placed under the child and go off at the first sign off wetness.

*Pull-ups can be used for younger children.

Why is it so Important to Raise Healthy and Fit Kids

If these statistics don't make you stop in your tracks and think about the things that we are feeding our kids, I don’t know what will.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 percent of children (over 9 million) 6-19 years old are overweight or obese -- a number that has tripled since 1980. In addition to the 16 percent of children and teens ages 6 to 19 who were overweight in 1999-2002, another 15 percent were considered at risk of becoming overweight. ("Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity Among Children and Adolescents: United States, 1999-2002"; Oct. 6, 2004)

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over the past three decades the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years. ("Prevalence of Overweight and Obesity Among Children and Adolescents: United States, 1999-2002"; Oct. 6, 2004)

Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80 percent if one or more parent is overweight or obese. (United States Department of Health and Human Services)

Those numbers are staggering but in a way not really surprising. Look at all the fast food joints, junk-food, soda pop, etc that is stocked in super markets, gas stations, etc. Even schools provide access to junk, at least the ones in this area do. Back to the fast food for a minute, and actually it’s not just fast food chains it’s restaurants too, have you seen the size of their meals? They provide enough food in one serving for two people!

So what do all these statistics have to do with our children? Well it’s up to us to teach them good eating habits and exercise. The old saying children learn what they live is so true. It’s not a bad thing that we have to be role models for our children in all areas including healthy eating and exercising. It just might force us to get healthy as well! Make this a family affair. Take walks together, ride bikes, etc. At the grocery store let the kids help you pick out fruits and veggies! Giving kids an allowance (II)

Do I get some say in what the allowance is spent on?

"What if my kid wants to spend his allowance on fireworks or a pellet gun?" you may be thinking. Don't worry – allowances can come with some oversight. But instead of making a list of banned items, Leatherman suggests setting up general guidelines like, "You can spend your allowance however you like, as long as it doesn't cause a problem." This gives you plenty of wiggle room. If your 6-year-old wants to buy a week's supply of cavity-causing sugar bunnies, simply cite the "cause a problem" clause.

How can I teach my child to save and to share?

You may want to let your child take charge of how much of his allowance to spend, how much to share, and how much to save. That's fine – he's sure to learn from his own successes and mistakes.

Alternately, you can build in guidelines that reflect your values. You can require your child to save 10 percent of his allowance and donate another 10 percent to a charity he chooses. And you may want to divide the savings into "fixed" and "revolving." The fixed savings go directly into the bank, to be reserved for a long-term expense such as college or a car. The revolving savings remain at home with your child, for him to dip into at his discretion. Even if he depletes his stash on a regular basis, he'll still learn firsthand how helpful savings can be in a pinch.

To encourage your child to make thoughtful decisions about money, consider forgoing the standard one-slotted piggy bank in favor of one with separate compartments. Examples are the Moonjar Moneybox and the Money Savvy Pig.

Is it okay to let my child borrow against his allowance?

"Mom, will you get me this toy?" your child begs with puppy dog eyes. "I'll promise I'll pay you back as soon as we get home." What should you do? As long as you're comfortable with the toy and the price, making the short-term loan can be a good lesson for your child. But have some safeguards in place.

"First, have your child sign the receipt," says Leatherman, in case he develops sudden amnesia about the agreement. "And don't give him the toy until he gives you the money." If upon arriving home, he discovers he doesn't have enough to pay for it, keep the toy until he earns or saves up the money. If the money never comes your way, feel free to get creative: The next time you hand over his allowance, include a "bill" for the toy.

What about giving advances?

Your child's best friend invites him to go to the movies, but he's already blown through his allowance. Should you give him next week's allowance early? "If your child is generally responsible with money and you feel confident that he'll pay you back, it's fine to give him an advance," says Leatherman, though it's a good idea to have him sign an IOU.

If you're not so sure, consider requesting collateral. "Have your child give you a possession that's equal in value to the amount he's borrowing," Leatherman suggests. And make sure it's not some broken or long-forgotten toy – the collateral needs to be something he'll want back. Return the collateral when the next allowance time rolls around and he makes good on the loan.

Of course, you can always just say no, especially if these advances are becoming an everyday occurrence. Your child may be disappointed about missing the movie, but he'll learn about the importance of building a "rainy day" fund.

Is it smart to tie my child's allowance to chores?

While many parents tie allowance to chores, Leatherman recommends against it. "Depending on your child's mood, allowance may not be enough to motivate him," she says. In which case, you're stuck with undone chores.

Also, when children get paid for chores, they don't fully experience what being a family member, a team member, is all about. It's important to teach them that all family members have responsibilities to the group. And that's nonnegotiable. Though they may gripe about doing the dishes, the need to contribute in a meaningful way is fundamental.

1. Hit a yard sale

Yard sales are usually piled high with kids' stuff. Younger children will love picking out a book or toy at this "outside store." And older kids will quickly discover that their allowance money stretches much further here than it does at the mall. Afterward, you can bask in the glow of snagging a great deal.

If your family likes to sleep in on Saturdays, take the kids to the local thrift shop instead. Both are also wonderful opportunities to talk about reusing and recycling.

2. Visit the bank

Taking your child to the bank is worth more than just a free lollipop. Watching bank transactions helps kids understand what cash actually is. Let your child be involved as much as possible. Even preschoolers can hand a check to the teller.

As your child gets older, consider opening an account for him, and help him learn to track his savings. Many banks and credit unions have special no-fee accounts for kids, complete with educational materials and online activities.

3. Enlist your child as a bill assistant

While your kid watches from his booster seat, you swipe your credit card, push a few buttons, pump the gas, and abracadabra – it's off to swim lessons. Can we really blame kids for thinking of a credit card as magic and infinite?

Break through the mystique by letting your child help you pay the credit-card bill. "This will let him see the whole picture," explains Sharon Lechter, coauthor of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Go through the charges, and remind him what you're paying for ("Remember when we had to stop for gas on the way to swim lessons?").

Preschoolers and kindergartners can put the check and bill into the envelope and stick on a stamp. Older children can help record the check number in your checkbook or online accounting system.

Have your child help you with the other bills, too -- utilities, rent, cable. Not only will he enjoy being a part of things, but he'll gain a whole new perspective on how money flows. There may be some nice side benefits as well; once your kid knows how much electricity costs, he may be more cooperative about turning out the light when he leaves a room.

4. Shop at a farmers' market

At the supermarket children don't see any sign of the farmer. Taking them to a farmers' market instead is a great way to help them understand the connection between work and money. Let your child be as involved as possible. As he helps you choose a bunch of carrots and hands the cash to the farmer, he'll get to see the market economy in action.

Explain that the farmer grew the blackberries himself, so he gets to decide how much they cost – and the customers then decide if they want to pay that amount. You can also explain that with the money the farmer earns, he can buy supplies to grow more blackberries.

5. Clip coupons

Before you recycle all those annoying circulars that arrive on your doorstep Sunday mornings, why not have a coupon-clipping fiesta with your child? Even if you're not a coupon clipper yourself, it's worth making the effort to teach your child about savings and discounts. He can help identify coupons that might be a good match for this week's grocery needs (even nonreaders can do this, because most coupons include pictures), help cut them out, and put them in a large envelope.

Next time you go to the grocery store, let your child be in charge of the coupons. Depending on his age, he can be the "coupon envelope holder," the "product finder," the "tracker of money saved," or all three. Afterward, talk about how much money the two of you saved and how you might use that money.

Or, if you can't stand dealing with coupons, use your grocery savings card at a participating market. While you shop, point out the deals marked for cardholders, and show him your family's savings on the receipt after you shop.

6. Volunteer and donate as a family

Integral to financial literacy is the understanding that some people have more than others – and that those with more can help those with less. "Families can do very simple things to get children in the habit of giving," says Laura Busque, Outreach Manager for the Ohion Credit Union League. "Try shopping together for food and delivering it to a local food pantry."

You can also match your child's interests with causes – if he's an animal lover, buy supplies for the local animal shelter or volunteer together to help feed the animals.

7. Encourage your child to make a little money

Earning money is not only educational but empowering for kids. The good old-fashioned lemonade stand remains a fine choice – and it has the added benefit of encouraging teamwork. "A lemonade stand is a perfect thing for siblings to do together," says Lechter. "The older one can handle the money, and the younger one can hand out the cups. And the older child can 'mentor' the younger child, which will help them both feel good."

Other money-making ideas for kids include selling outgrown toys and clothes at a flea market, helping to host a family yard sale, and doing chores above and beyond the usual around the house for extra pocket money.

8. Take a class

Many credit unions and banks offer seminars for children. You may think your kid will just roll his eyes at the idea, but give him a chance. "I never cease to be amazed at how interested kids are in learning about money," says Mark Hodowanic, who helps teach seminars at TopLine Federal Credit Union. Check to see what your bank or credit union offers.

9. Set a family savings goal

Is your child dying to go to Disneyland? Does he have to have a trampoline? Agree on a long-term goal and start a fund in a jar, suggests Sam Renick, author of It's a Habit, Sammy Rabbit! This makes the family work as a team, and, Renick says, "brings joy into saving." Your children can help deposit your loose change in the "pot" and can contribute part of their allowance from time to time.

10. Play games

"Kids are constantly being bombarded with messages to spend money, and we need to counteract that," says Sam Renick, financial consultant and children's author. "The earlier kids start developing good money habits, the better."

The good news? Teaching your child how to handle money is simpler – and more fun – than it sounds. Here are seven tricks to turn money lessons from a fight into a delight :

1. Hand your preschooler a buck.

Just because a child can't change a dollar yet doesn't mean she shouldn't experience the dollar itself. Exposing children to money sets the groundwork for financial literacy in the same way that reading out loud to them sets the groundwork for literacy.

In the preschool years, some hands-on experience is enough. Preschoolers learn best when they can actually hold what they're learning about. So get over any germophobia around coins and bills and let your 3-year-old hand a fiver to the cashier. Let your 4-year-old help you drop spare change into a savings jar. Pretend games like "store" or "bank" are also a fun way for preschoolers to grasp that money buys things.

And don't stress if she confuses a penny with a dime or if you catch her using a stack of play money for a doll bed. At this age, it's all good.

2. Dispose of "disposable thinking."

From broken toys to outdated TVs, almost everything gets tossed in our culture. By teaching your child the value of things, you set a cornerstone of financial literacy. "Kids can learn that possessions deserve our care. If your child throws a book, explain that throwing books can damage them, and that treating them gently helps them last a long time," says elementary teacher Laura Gerrity.

If something does break and your child cavalierly says, "It's okay, we can just get another one," take advantage of the teachable moment. Gently explain that replacing it would cost money, and that you'll need to decide whether spending that money is a good idea. This may lead into an interesting discussion of all the other things that cost money, such as food, rent, and gas.

When your child outgrows some clothes, ask her to help you wash and fold them so they can be passed along to a smaller neighborhood kid or to a family shelter. Shifting from a "break it, chuck it, replace it" attitude to a "waste not" attitude can help even young children build a foundation for sound money habits.

3. Encourage delayed gratification.

"I want it now!" How many times have you heard that – this week? Kids by nature want immediate gratification, but learning to wait is vital. "The ability to hold off, to not have to have something right away, is a building block for when kids eventually do understand money," says Jerlean Daniel, deputy executive director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Learning to wait can be taught even to kids who aren't using money yet. If your child requests a glass of milk while you're sweeping the floor, don't immediately put the broom aside. Explain that you'll get it when you finish. If she requests yet another princess outfit (even though she already has several), suggest that she put it on her birthday "wish list." "Creating opportunities for delayed gratification is one of the best gifts parents can give their children," says Sharon Lechter, coauthor of Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money.

Around age 5, kids can start practicing with money itself. "Start with a short waiting period," advises Laura Busque, Outreach Manager for the Ohio Credit Union League. "For example, help your 5-year-old save up for a Popsicle or piece of candy. Give her a quarter and explain that next week you'll give her another one, and that you can then go out and get the treat." Alternatively, you can have her earn the money by doing an extra chore.

As your child gets older, her capacity for waiting will increase. When your grade-schooler requests a new gadget, tell her that she can't have it right now but she can save up for it if she really wants it, and help her plan how to save the money. You'll probably hear more whining up front, but your child will get a boost of self-esteem when she does manage to get what she wants on her own.

4. Table the taboo.

Some feel it's inappropriate to discuss money with children, but experts say kids benefit from being in on the discussion. Otherwise, they may develop misperceptions like thinking that a debit card never runs out of money or that if you break something, hey, you just go get another one. "You don't have to be afraid to share money concepts with your kids – even if you're having financial challenges," says Lechter. "Think of it as a chance for the whole family to learn new skills together."

Day to day, this can be as simple as talking out loud. "While withdrawing money from the ATM, you could say, 'I put money in the bank earlier, and now I'm getting some of it back out,'" says Philip Heckman, director of youth programs for the Credit Union National Association. "This conveys that money doesn't come out of nothing."

When out shopping, explain your thought process: "If I buy this beautiful tablecloth, I won't be able to pay for gas for the week. Gas is more important than the tablecloth, so I guess I'll have to skip the tablecloth." These kinds of comments show that there are times when the best spending decision is not spending.

But keep things cool and casual, and don't push the point. "Many brief explanations work better than a few, long money lectures," Heckman explains.

5. Be a role model.

What you do will have a much greater effect on your kids than what you say. If you want your child to learn to save, make sure you're saving some money yourself – and that your child knows you do it. If you want her to learn the value of generosity, consider: Are you donating to charity or volunteering your time for a cause? Involve your child in these activities, too.

6. Let them practice.

Learning good money management takes practice. So invest in a little play money (or make some!) for your preschooler so that she can play "store" with you, and consider giving your big kid an allowance.

Piggy banks are a good idea, even for kids who don't have an allowance yet. Your 5-year-old may surprise you by finding a "lucky penny" and immediately dropping it in her bank. Even if she doesn't understand the concept of saving for a goal, she's practicing saving – and that's a great start.

7. Skip the lecture – tell a story instead.

Give a lecture on responsible spending, and you'll get a glassy-eyed stare. But tell a story about a boy who must decide between buying lunch and buying a new action figure, and you'll likely get rapt attention. "When I use stories and music to break down the concepts, the kids really get it," says Renick. Here are some books for 4- to 8-year-olds to get you started:

Why an allowance?

To learn to ride a bike, you need a bike. And to learn to manage money, you need … a little money. By practicing with their own money, children get to try out concepts – saving for a rainy day, prioritizing goals, and delayed gratification – that might otherwise seem abstract or irrelevant.

Allowances give kids room to make mistakes in a low-risk environment – sort of like learning to drive in an empty parking lot. If your 8-year-old can't go to the movies with a friend's family because he burned through all his allowance buying action figures, he may be more likely to plan ahead when he gets next week's allowance.

Think of it this way : Teach your child the pitfalls of impulse buying early on, and he's less likely to arrive on your doorstep years from now with a duffel bag full of dirty laundry and a mountain of credit card debt.

What's a good age to start?

Around age 5 or 6 is typical. But some parents start in the preschool years, while others wait until age 10 or older. There's no magic starting time, says Kristan Leatherman, coauthor of Millionaire Babies or Bankrupt Brats? Love and Logic Solutions to Teaching Kids about Money. "The best time is when your child begins to understand that money can buy him things he wants."

So if your child tends to shrug at money, losing it before it can find its way to his dusty piggy bank, hold off until you see signs that he enjoys saving it or thinking about how he might use it.

How much is reasonable?

Consider your family's financial resources, the cost of daily living in your area, and your own comfort level. "I've seen it all over the place," says credit union market manager Mark Hodowanic. "While there might be some general rules of thumb, it’s up to your family to decide what's best."

Many families like to use a formula corresponding to age, such as 50 cents or a dollar per week for each year of a child's life ($3.50 or $7 for a 7-year-old, $4 or $8 for an 8-year-old). A formula has certain advantages over a flat amount, says Leatherman. "The kids get an automatic raise on their birthdays, so it takes away the question of when to increase the allowance," she explains. "And it cuts out sibling arguments, because the younger kid can understand why the older kid gets more."

While many families give allowance weekly, others do it biweekly or monthly. The important thing is consistency. Set up a system to help you remember, so you have the right change and to avoid nagging reminders from your child. On the other hand, don't feel stuck – if your current arrangement simply isn't working, you can always sit down with your child and come up with a different plan.

When will your child understand that money is earned – not waiting in infinite supply at the ATM? And when, oh when, will she realize that she doesn't "need" that glittery tiara in the same sense that she needs a warm jacket? We tapped the fiscal and educational experts to give you some idea about what to expect year to year as your child learns about the world of dollars and cents.

Your 2-year-old

Give a 2-year-old a quarter, and she's as likely to drop it down the air vent as to put it in a piggy bank. She doesn't yet understand that the shiny circles in Mommy's purse are worth more than a jelly bean or a big acorn. "Money is a concrete representation of an abstract idea, and 2-year-olds don't have the representational thought to understand that," explains preschool director Megan Hans.

However, your little one can understand the most concrete definition of money – that "money" means dollars and coins – and she can learn that it's something we use at the store. She may enjoy hearing you say the names of the coins and repeating these words herself. And she probably loves sliding play dollars into a toy cash register or pennies into a piggy bank.

Just never let her handle coins unsupervised – they're one of the biggest choking hazards around. That means keeping your purse out of reach, too, until she's old enough to be trusted not to pop spare change into her mouth.

Your 3-year-old

Some 3-year-olds can begin identifying coins by type – if they've had enough exposure, says Jerlean Daniel, deputy executive director of the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

And as representational thought develops and a child witnesses more cash transactions, she begins to grasp that money has some value. Give your 3-year-old a quarter, and she may understand that she can "buy" a treat – but she may still be bewildered when the cashier doesn't give the quarter back.

Your 4-year-old

Many 4-year-olds can understand the "trade aspect" of money, so they know they won't get a coin back after handing it to a cashier. But give your 4-year-old that quarter, and you may hear her planning to buy a jungle gym with it. Most 4-year-olds can't comprehend the magnitude of price differences. "But they're starting to grasp that a quarter is worth something different than a nickel," says Laura Busque, outreach manager for the Ohio Credit Union League and a former teacher.

Many 4-year-olds can appreciate that money comes from a job and that pay is limited. They can also understand that some people have less money than others and that those with more can help those with less.

Your 5-year-old

At 5, your child will probably begin developing a slightly more realistic idea of money –many parents even start a small allowance around this age.

So if you explain that $10 will buy a set of art supplies, while a quarter will only buy a piece of candy, your child will be more likely to accept this. But it doesn't mean she'll want to save up for those art supplies; she'll probably opt for the candy. Kindergartners are still very invested in the present moment.

Still, a piggy bank is a good idea, because 5-year-olds can understand that money belongs in a safe place. In one way, your child's focus on the present can work to her benefit; after the quarter clangs into the piggy bank, she may forget all about it.

Your 6-year-old

The concept of "saving up" will make more sense at this age. But because the future is still a murky concept, shorter-term savings goals will be easier to grasp. So hand your budding money manager that quarter, and she might deposit it in her piggy bank for a couple of days, sweet-talk another quarter from Grandpa, and immediately buy a pack of gum.

During the first-grade school year, many children start learning how to count by fives and tens, so they'll be able to add up nickels and dimes. And at 6, your child will likely get the difference between a "want" and a "need," says elementary school teacher Laura Gerrity.

Your 7-year-old

Your child is starting to appreciate that she has choices when it comes to money. Give her a quarter, and you may see the wheels spinning as she weighs putting it into the piggy bank versus popping it into the nearest gumball machine. She's also bound to realize by now that a quarter isn't much to get excited about!

Budding math skills enable many second graders to add combinations of nickels, dimes, and quarters together.

Your 8-year-old

"By age 7 or 8, children will have a good notion of what the real value of a quarter is. They'll know that it's five fives, or 25 ones," says Daniel. So the gift of a quarter may inspire a jaded eye-roll rather than bouncing glee.

But the good news is that your 8-year-old is getting better at "delayed gratification." She also has a better grasp of the future. So longer-term savings goals are much more feasible at this age. If your child has been exposed to the idea that "every little bit counts," she may piggy bank the quarter with a sense of satisfaction that she's a little closer to buying that scooter.

What to do at home if your child is having behavior problems at school

Don't punish your child.

Children aren't to blame for having bad feelings, says Wipfler. "It's not something they asked for. Your child isn't bad, and you're not bad for having a child with a behavior problem; these things just happen." Punishment for bad behavior will only make your child feel terrible about himself and prolong the difficulty by further shutting down his thinking.

Think about what's going on in your child's life.

Is he dealing with a big, one-time event, like a divorce or a death in the family, or smaller stressors over the long term, like teasing from an older sibling or pressure from a critical parent? Criticism can sap a child's positive feelings about himself; teasing can leave him looking for someone smaller or younger to take it out on. If your whole family is weathering a trauma, your child may be trying to handle strong feelings on his own without adding to your burden. You may never know exactly what's at the root of his difficulty with school, but you don't need to know in order to help him.

Try talking.

Your child may be able to tell you straight out what's bothering him, or you may have to set up certain conditions first. Children talk to adults when they feel safe, loved, and close. You can give your child that sense of contact either by playing with him vigorously and generously, or by listening to him without judgment or interruption.

Your child may also be more willing to open up if you ask him a positive question first.

Someday when you're lying in the grass at the park, or out for a walk, or riding in the car without being in a hurry, ask in a relaxed tone, "If you could make school any way you wanted, what would it be like?" or "If you could make recess perfect, how would you change it?" You'll hear about what's hard at school, but you'll have bypassed the hopeless feelings that can make children reluctant to talk.

Let your child fall apart.

Children keep a lot inside but are always looking for ways to get their feelings out. You can help, says Wipfler, by being ready for "a tantrum, or a rage, or an insistence that something be done in a very particular way or his world will crash: 'You have to put butter on my mashed potatoes — it can't be margarine' or 'I will not turn off the TV.' Children will get very particular about a small thing because they have a little volcano of feelings inside that has nothing to do with what they're getting upset about. But it's the only way they know to address what they feel."

This won't be easy for you as a parent.

You may be every bit as cranky as your child at the moment he picks to fall apart, or you may be under a lot of pressure to get something done. But your child will benefit tremendously if you can go down on one knee, put an arm around him, and listen while he cries as long as he needs to. Your child may say things that are difficult to hear — criticism of you, perhaps, or revelations of difficulties you didn't know he was having. But if he can cry all the way through these feelings, using you as a target, your child will feel heard and understood and will be able to think better in situations that might otherwise throw him. The day after a big emotional release, his behavior in school (and with his friends and with you) will most likely be profoundly better.

Stay close to your child.

You can always help your child have a better day at school if you take time for closeness. Get up a bit earlier to carve out some relaxed time with your child as the day begins; a little bit of snuggling or playful cuddling in the morning can set him up for a better day. He'll go to school feeling more connected to you, and a little sturdier when he encounters a trigger that usually sets him off.

Play with your child.

Set up playtimes with your child so he can get some of the attention he's seeking by misbehaving at school; you may also get a better sense of what's on his mind. In his book Building Healthy Minds, Stanley Greenspan, a child psychiatrist and clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at George Washington Medical School, advocates "floor time," or play, as a way to discover what's bothering a child. "When a child is misbehaving, pretend play can sometimes help reveal what's on his mind, why he's so angry and provocative."

Ever thought about Goal Setting for Kids? Goal setting is one of the most important skills that a person can learn, and the earlier this skill is learned, the more chances there are for successful outcomes in a person’s life. Adults know that goal setting is all about planning, making progress with that plan and reaching final goals or achievements. Once a child learns how to do this, they can use this tool for more success in school and at home.

Goal setting for kids will help your children to do well on their school tests and in activities such as sports, music programs or outside academic or arts programs - even at home, and with their personal finances. Teaching your child how to be a goal setter will give them a sense that they are capable of whatever they want to do. That’s valuable!

How to help your child be a goal setting child

Goal setting for children is basically the same as for adults, with a few caveats. Because they are young, and not as emotionally or cognitively developed, goals should be smaller and more tangible. The idea with goal setting for kids is to get them started in the life-long frame of mind for thinking, planning and taking action to achieve results. The basic premises of goal setting remain the same. You can help your child learn to set goals by working through these steps with him:

Ask, “What do you want to achieve?” – Help your child describe in specific terms something he would like to do that will take some work/planning (getting an A on his next math test, earning money to purchase a certain kind of bicycle).

Ask, “How will you get there?” – Help him plan out the steps to take and the mini-goals to reach on his way to the ultimate goal.

Establish accountability – Have your child write down what he wants to achieve and what his plan for getting there is. He can read it each day to help him with personal accountability, and he can share it with you, or another trusted adult to help him stay motivated, inspired and on-track.

Achieve – Achievement is not only for the final outcome, but also for the small goals that are met along the way.

Review plan/goals/outcomes – Throughout the process and at the end as well, review with your child the plan and how it is going. Do adjustments need to be made? How does he feel about his progress and where it is leading? How was the goal setting experience for him?

If your child does not reach his ultimate goal, talk to him about what he learned on the way. He still has learned valuable lessons about planning and goal setting, and he’s probably learned about himself. Encourage him to not give up on dreams that are important to him, but that if one plan doesn’t work, he has to revise the plan and try again.

Teaching your child to be a goal-setting child is one of the best things you can do.

You will be giving him or her, a valuable gift that they will use for their entire lives, empowering them to achieve wonderful things in every area of life. Playing with Your Child – How to Start It, Why It’s So Important

In these busy times, when parents and children have schedules packed to the max, family closeness can fall by the wayside. Most of us have to make an effort to guarantee that work, school, sports, and chores don’t swallow up the very relationships that make those things important.

When is the last time you played or goofed around with your child? Can you remember back that far? Many parents can’t. Life has made us so serious, so focused, that we’ve lost the joy of the simple things, and play was one of the first to go.

But as any child instinctively knows, play is essential to life. It brightens the heart and lightens the spirit. For kids, who live closer than we do to nature, play is as spontaneous as breathing. Sadly, most grown-ups have lost that skill. Our children can be our refresher course.

Playing with your child brings you back to the present, reminds you of what matters, and slows you down long enough to smell the roses. It also connects you emotionally with your child, rebuilding the closeness that the fast-paced, boring routines of life are all too quick to strip away.

Playing together is even more important for your child than it is for you, because she needs to feel close to you to feel loved and happy. If you’ve neglected time together for long enough, it may appear that your child isn’t interested in your attentions. She may even tell you as much. But that’s just bluster, hiding the fear that you will disappoint her again if she lets herself wish for time alone with you. If you initiate playing together, and do it at frequent intervals, even the most aloof pre-teen will start to look forward to it and, in time, throw herself into the fun.

What kind of playing should you do? Pay attention to the activities your child engages in: his idea of enjoyment. If these things seem boring to you, try hanging out nearby, observing as he does them, with words that express your curiosity. You just may find you actually develop a genuine interest. If your child is a couch potato, take up your perch on the couch beside him, but after you’re allowed “in,” initiate some play that might be more pleasant than TV.

Think back to what you did as a child that was memorable, especially activities you did with your parents that stay with you still. Think about things that are free or cost little, that involve experiencing life together.

Start a list of ideas as they come, and add any of the following that you resonate with :

* Raking stacks of autumn leaves, then jumping or rolling in them
* Taking a hike through the forest preserve
* Skating at the roller rink together
* Walking the dog, taking turns with the rope
* Reading comics or joke books together (or books of poetry or stories)
* Making cookies, pizza or a cake
* Building a fort out of snow or chairs and blankets
* Playing hide and seek, hide the thimble, cards or board games
* Lying on a blanket looking up at the stars
* Sitting in front of the wood stove in a dark room, telling stories
* Making shadow figures on the wall with your hands and a flashlight
* Having a treasure hunt
* Roasting marshmallows over a fire
* Watching a parade
* Going to the aquarium, zoo or museum
* Flying kites together
* Building something
* Making a scrapbook
* Making up a silly poem or song
* Watching a movie, with popcorn and no interruptions
* Playing a memory game, like “I’m going to Grandma’s house,
and in my suitcase I’m going to pack …”
* Getting up early to watch the sunrise from a hill
* Playing games of pretend
* Going somewhere special, like the beach
* Having a pancake picnic in the snow

Playing together is different than finding entertaining activities for your child. Play involves you, while entertainment excuses you from the picture. If you find yourself saying, “But my schedule is too busy for any of the things on that list,” consider whether your schedule needs some pruning. After all, who’s going to remember in 20 years if you stay late at work or not next Tuesday? But will your child ever forget the Tuesday you ride the rollercoaster together?

Closeness with a child cannot be taken for granted. Like any other relationship, it will slip away unless it’s made a priority. Nothing builds trust and bonding with a child like sharing a moment of silliness and laughter. Come together for light-hearted play, and you just may find your child opens up about serious subjects. The relaxed atmosphere of play helps us let our guard down and reveal more of ourselves.

When you play together, let your child feel like the most important person in your world. Give him your undivided attention: no cell phones, no interruptions, no slipping into your own private thoughts. Be present – body, mind and spirit. Then let yourself do whatever comes naturally, with the abandon you felt when you yourself were a child. Your instincts will be your guide.

Growing closer through play is easy. It just takes dedicated moments, given on a fairly regular basis, so your child begins to count on having time with you.

Let your child re-teach you the wonderful secrets of play. You both will feel more secure and peaceful – and a whole lot happier, as the reason you do it all for, starts to come back to you.

For most children, the actual process of learning begins much before school. Many children already know their alphabets, the names of animals, colors and other more complicated stuff before they reach school.
